A scrumptious family roast meal on a Sunday is difficult to surpass, we have to admit. And roast beef with Yorkshire puddings? Roast potatoes? ALL of the trimmings? It’s the quintessential British dish, nobody can deny it. A classic family roast dinner oozes warmth with juicy beef topside joint roasted just long enough to be pink in the middle, and many are surprised to learn that it’s really not as difficult to cook as you might think.

To achieve tender, flavourful results, sear the joint first in a hot pan, then roast it in a preheated oven at 160°C (fan) for about 20 minutes per 500g, plus an extra 20 minutes. A 2kg joint will take roughly 1 hour 40 minutes for medium. Always rest the beef for at least 20 minutes after roasting to lock in the juices.
This joint comfortably serves 6 to 8 people, making it a great choice for Sunday lunches, Christmas dinner, or family gatherings. Any leftovers can be used in sandwiches, wraps, or stir-fries the next day.
Marinating is recommended, especially for larger joints. It helps enhance flavour and improve tenderness. Use red wine, garlic, herbs, or a mustard-based rub and marinate for a few hours or overnight. Alternatively, slow-cooking or braising can naturally tenderise the meat without a marinade.
Yes, you can freeze it either raw or cooked. If freezing raw, do so on the day of delivery and defrost in the fridge before cooking. If freezing after cooking, slice or portion it first and use within 2–3 months. Always defrost thoroughly and reheat until piping hot throughout.
