A new cookery competition, ‘Young Cooks’, aimed at young school children reached its grand final last Saturday, 7 March, with the five finalists recreating their dishes for the judging panel in Eastleigh College’s training kitchens.
This inaugural ‘Young Cooks’ competition was open to all children aged 12 and under and had been organised by Owton’s Traditional Family Butchers in partnership with Fuller’s Family Restaurants with the intention of inspiring a passion for cooking among younger children.
The competition saw children showing off their creativity and cooking skills. Imaginative dishes included: Marshmallow Cake by Bella Powell of St James Primary School, West End; gluten-free New York Cheesecake by Melody Monroe Tate, St Francis Primary School, Chandler’s Ford; Homemade Burgers by Charlie Arnold, Ludlow Infant School, Woolston, Southampton; Spaghetti Bolognese by Thomas Arnold, Ludlow Junior School, Woolston, Southampton.
The winning entry by Jake Avern, aged 11, from Oasis Academy Mayfield, Sholing, Southampton, was an English Breakfast Twist – Scotch Egg Mountain. Runner-up was Bella Powell with her Marshmallow Cake.
